10 Secrets of the Morning Person

Are most mornings hitting snooze 5 times, laying in bed scrolling on your phone and then finally dragging yourself out of bed rushing into your day feeling constantly behind and just surviving?

Creating an intentional morning routine can be a game changer in feeling more grounded, happier, being more productive and achieving your goals.

Research suggests 92% of highly productive and successful people wake up between 5-6am.

Benefits of waking up earlier

Less Interruptions

There are much less interruptions early in the morning. Emails aren’t flowing in, no one is calling you or messaging you, maybe others in your house are still asleep. It’s purely your time.

Better Clarity and Focus

Your brain has not already made a million decisions. You are able to think more clearly and have more brain capacity. It can be helpful to do tasks that are most challenging for you at this point of your day first. Because you have less interruptions, you are able to focus and be more productive.

Accomplishing Tasks Build Momentum

When you are accomplishing tasks first thing, it motivates you to want to continue to do things that help you feel your best and continue to accomplish things.

You are More Likely to fit in Movement

If your days are straight out, waking up earlier and using this time to incorporate movement into your day is key. When you start your day moving your body, you are also improving circulation to your brain improving energy, productivity, and focus.

Movement can look many different ways, wether it’s a walk outside, yoga, stretching, or more formal style workout, it all matters and helps you feel more mentally clear for your day.

Time for a Balanced Breakfast

When you wake up early, you are able to take the time to prepare an intentional balanced breakfast. Eating a high quality breakfast is important to break the fast from the night, and gives you energy and focus for your day. You are also more likely to feel in control with future meals through out the day and minimize late night eating, trying to play catch up.

Doing More thing that Bring You Peace

Watching the sunrise is serene, peaceful and therapeutic. It gives you a sense of calmness at the start of your day.

What are the Secrets of Morning People?

1. A Successful Morning Starts the Night Before

Take the time the night before to clean and organize your space, so you are not waking up to caious and messes that feel stressful. Do as many tasks you can at this point to eliminate morning chores when things are busier.

  • Set up the coffee maker

  • Do the dishes

  • Lay your clothes out

  • Decide the workout class or video you are doing

  • Fill your water bottle

When you are motivated and organized the night before, you’re more likely to continue that momentum in the morning.

2. Get to Bed and Wake up at Similar Times

Getting adequate sleep and rest is key to waking up feeling rested and ready to start your day. If you are exhausted everything is going to feel hard, especially waking up early. When you go to sleep and wake up at similar times your body gets into a routine, and it’s much easier to fall asleep, but to also wake up! Even on the weekends, try not to change your sleeping patterns drastically. Getting to bed and waking up within a 30-60 min window of what you do on weekdays can be very helpful to ease back into the weekdays.

3. Take Small Steps

Start with small increments of time to wake up earlier. If you currently wake up at 7am and are trying to wake up at 5am, it’s way too much of a jump at once and you aren’t going to be able to stick with it. Start with 10 – 15 increments. I know it feels like too small of a change, but you are more likely to be able to do this and allow your body to adjust. These extra 15 minutes in your morning can add up! Same idea with getting to bed earlier, start with small adjustments from your usual bedtime.

4. Move your Alarm Away from Your Bed

When your alarm or phone is next to you, it’s much easier to hit snooze. Hitting snooze 5 times is psychologically telling yourself you aren’t worth waking up and taking the time for. Then you rush into your day feeling like you are constantly behind and just trying to survive. Everything feels more stressful and this creates more anxiety. When you have to get up out of bed to turn your alarm off, you are more likely to stay up. What do they say? “A body in motion stays in motion!”

5. Create Your Environment

If it’s still dark outside, create your own mood and ambiance!
Turn on the Lights which naturally decreases production of melatonin and helps you wake up.

Everyone is still sleeping in my house when I wake up, so I go in the basement or my office with lighting and create my own vibe. I don’t look out the window at this point, or look at message. I do me first, and decide how my day is going to go!

6. Action Precedes Motivation

Just do it! Count down from 5, and just get up. The more you lay there and think about it, your emotional brain has time to take over and change your mind. The more consistently you wake up at similar times, the easier it will become to get up!

7. Drink Water

Your body is dehydrated from sleeping. Starting to drink water right when you wake up helps to get things moving again. Improves digestion and mental clarity.

8. Your Morning Creates Your Day

Accomplishing tasks first thing in the morning creates momentum to increase productivity through out the day. Do three things that make you feel good right in the morning. Instead of picking up your phone in bed;

  • get up

  • start drinking water

  • stretch

  • brush your teeth

  • get dressed

  • make your bed

  • move your body

  • read something positive

choose ONE to start with first
