7 Tips for Dealing with Sugar Cravings

It’s 3pm, you are feeling tired and have an insatiable craving for something sweet…what happens then?

You’re at work and grab a candy bar from the vending machine.

You get a little boost of energy and then by 5pm when you’re leaving work you’re exhausted.

You skip your workout and head home to snack on ANYTHING you can find.

Then you’re frustrated that you didn’t get your workout in, you ate poorly and chuck in today as a loss.

5 Tips to Help with Sugar Addiction

  1. Get More Sleep.

This is a non negotiable. When you are tired or stressed, your body with crave energy in the form of sugar. These cravings are often a result of being sleep deprived, sometimes for months and years on end.

  2. Eat a Heathy BREAKFAST.

If you skip breakfast you are more likely to overeat throughout the day and make poor food choices. If time is an issue, try a healthy, no-cook breakfast — peanut butter and banana on whole-grain toast; or a whole-wheat English muffin with cheddar cheese and pear slices — for sustained energy and relief from sugar cravings.

  3. Reduce the amount of Caffeine per day.

The ups and downs of caffeine through blood sugar swings cause sugar cravings to be more frequent.

  4. Drink More Water.

Sweet cravings can be a sign of dehydration. Soft drinks are America’s #1 source of added sugar. Aim for 9 glasses (8oz ea) of water per day.

  5. Add PROTEIN to every meal.

Protein, found in poultry, fish, beans, eggs, tofu and dairy products, slows your digestion so you’ll feel fuller longer. Protein stabilizes your blood sugar, which helps you avoid the spikes and dips that lead you to reach for quick sugar fixes.

  6. Eat Naturally sweet foods.

Sweeter vegetables include corn, carrots, onions, beets, sweet potato. Fruits and vegetables will give you so much more nutrition and fiber so your body can run more efficiently.

  7. Slow Down and find Sweetness in Non-Food Ways.

Your body does not biologically need sugar, but it does long for hugs, support, being outside, and movement.

When life becomes sweet enough itself, no additives are needed!
