Why Having a Choice with your Nutrition is Important

What if the first question you were asked when starting a nutrition program was, “what do you Value most?” How freeing to have a choice in what you actually Want to eat, vs feeling like the only way to lose weight is focusing on restriction and eliminating foods. *deep sigh*

What does having a choice with nutrition mean to you?

It can feel scary not having rules around food and living by someone else’s expectations or “societal norms.” This is a real feeling if you have lived most of your life following some sort of diet or food rules.

Oftentimes the early stages of nutrition coaching are learning to check in with yourself and experimenting with what you like, what you don’t, and what makes the most sense for your individual preferences and circumstances. Not mine, not your neighbors, not your best friends.

CHOICE means

Opening the fridge and choosing the foods you like, but also the foods that will support you in feeling your best.

Mixing your foods all together, or eating them separately.

Asking yourself if you even want the cake, or are you just eating out of obligation / social pressure?

Deciding which sources of carbs, proteins and fats you are using to create your meal.

Feeling like you are in charge of your body and whatever choice you make is yours.

Recognizing sometimes you make choices that support your future self, and sometimes you make choices that don’t feel so great later. But both choices are your own, and you can also choose how you move forward.

When you don’t have a choice, it eventually leads to rebellion.

The foods that were eliminated, that you actually did value in your life, hold power over you. When you finally give in, it’s an out of control feeling that leads to spiraling thoughts of guilt and shame.

A big part of creating a healthy relationship with food AND achieving lasting fat loss, is learning how to include the foods you value in a meaningful way, and giving your body the nutrients it needs to function optimally and feel your best!
